The Most Racist Country in the Western World

Or homophobic, or xenophobic, or anti-semitic.


It's been said that industrialized nations are becoming more intolerant of foreigners, and a provocative new paper in the August issue of Kyklos tries to quantify just how bigoted Western nations are. (Free version of the paper is here.)


The paper's authors used responses from a question in the Human Beliefs and Values Survey -- a twice-a-decade survey of social and political attitudes around the world -- which asked respondents how they would feel about living next to: People of different ethnicities, Muslims, Jews, immigrants or foreign workers, and homosexuals.


The researchers used these answers as a proxy for bigotry in each country. (The survey took place in 1999-2000).


And the most prejudiced country? Drumroll please...


Northern Ireland with an estimated 44 percent of its population saying they wouldn't want to live next to one of the above five groups took the top "prize." Breathing down it's neck was Greece with 43.2 percent and at 37.6 percent Italy rounded out the top three.



The least bigoted nations were dominated by Scandinavian countries: Sweden (13.4%), the Netherlands (17.2%), Iceland (18.4%), Canada (21.5%), Denmark (21.9%).


(Germany joins the ranks of the most bigoted nations using an alternative measure based on how strong bigoted feelings were among those who had them, the researchers found.)


The United States was estimated to have a 30.4 percent level of bigotry.
On average, about one out of every three people in the 19 countries used in the study were bigoted.


By far the most hated group were homosexuals with an overall average of 19.6 percent of people saying they wouldn't want them as neighbors. Next up were Muslims with 14.5 percent, but since the survey was taken before September 11th, those results might be much different today.

Anyone else not suprised how low Canada ranked? Not gonna say the word I use to describe them for Nitz's sake.

And HELL YEAH! Anyone with any knowledge of WWII could know they'd rank last. Only country to attempt to save their jews. (sent them all to a neutral country when the Nazi's invaded.) I'm kinda dissappointed France wasn't mentioned. Woulda thought they'd be number one, but they probably just gave up on the survey.

Well let me think....of my friends in real life, one of them is black, two is hispanic, and I'm white. (yes, I only got 3 friends). One is Catholic, I'm jewish, one is protestant, and one was Buddist last I heard. I don't know any muslims/people from the middle east though, but I don't hate them. I'm fine with gay people as long as they don't try to feel me up or show way too much PDA, but I'm not good with anyone showing PDA. Only groups of people I ever insult are the French and the Canadians, but that's not really a hatred. That's just because Canadians are funny and the French...well, if you look at their history, the only two things they did that wasn't completely *****ish was the 9 Year's War(France vs. 8 other major European countries? and not losing? DAYUM!) and Napoleon. and those two things were 1680's and 1800's respectively. And what they did in WWII kinda screws them over in my books.

the united states ranks due to all the hidden malitias and white supremist groups floating round teh south and northwestern areas..


i figured germany. also one is france..they have been known to be very arrogant to atleast americans.


teh muslim hating in the states obviously stems form 9/11 as carlos mencia said in a skit. it was blacks and mexicans getting the brunt of everything. then 9-11 happened, and the blacks and mexicans walked up to the muslims and said "tag your it" thats so worng to say..but unfortunatley is hwo soem people are.

Thing is, most people hate the foreigners that come to our country, because its usually the scum that comes.

For us, in the Netherlands, we have too many Turkish people coming in. I know that might sound racist, but here is why: The people in Turkey themselves also say that the bad people/the scum, go away to other countries.

I've been to Turkey several times, they are really nice people there, good manners, very polite and cheerful people. And i don't mean just the older people, also the young ones.
Here in Netherland, if you look for Turkish people, you get spit on, yelled at, get threats from them.

Thats what brings out the racist side in most people. I'm not racist, i might sound like it sometimes, but i just HATE the ones that come to our countries to spoil it for everyone else.
