Video memory interface?

What difference does the memory interface (bits) of a video card make?

Example... you're trying to decide between two video cards.

Card 1: 256MB, 256-bit
Card 2: 512MB, 128-bit

Which card would be better?

Take the 256 bit one if your interested in more powerful graphics in stuff like Games.

Take the 512 MB memory one if you want smoother playing videos and streams of media etc.</span>

Is it similar to the bits of a processor (like a 32 or 64 bit processor), only for the video card instead? Or is it a bit different?
