CHARLEROI, Pa. -- A man is behind bars after leading police on a high-speed chase through three counties.

The chase started on McKean Avenue in Charleroi and ended on Route 88 at the border of Fallowfield and Carroll townships. Police said the pursuit began when they pulled 41-year-old Charles Sleith over for having a broken tailpipe.

After running a background check, they found his license was suspended and he had a bench warrant. The chase ended with a dozen squad cars surrounding Charles Sleith's red Volkswagen.

Charleroi police Officer William Gardner said, "After we boxed him in on Craven Hill, he didn't resist or anything. He stated that he'd made a mistake."

At one point, the chase sped up to about 80 miles an hour. No one was hurt.

Charles Sleith is facing multiple charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude police and aggravated assault.[/spoiler]

I saw all the police cars across the river yesterday when it was happening, plus I soon saw a news helicopter. I didn't find out for sure what happened until today.

Car chase ends with man's arrest

A high-speed chase in the Mid-Mon Valley ended early Wednesday night with the arrest of a Charleroi man.

Charleroi police stopped Charles Sleith, 41, of 53 Craven Drive, about 5:30 p.m. for a moving-traffic violation in the 1200 block of McKean Avenue.

When police ran his name through a criminal information database, they discovered his license had been suspended.

The suspect fled, leading borough police and additional units from state police at Belle Vernon on a 90-minute chase through North Charleroi, Belle Vernon, Washington Township, Fayette City, Perry, Rostraver and back to the borough.

Police said Sleith was not far from his house when he was eventually stopped at 7:09 p.m. on Craven Hill Road, where he was arrested and taken into custody. The Charleroi police cruiser sustained minor damages, but no one was hurt during the chase, police said.

Sleith was charged with driving under suspension, reckless driving, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and possessing instruments of a crime.

Police said it was later discovered he had an outstanding bench warrant for missing a hearing for an unspecified prior offense.

Sleith was arraigned in Washington County night court before District Judge Mark Wilson, of Monongahela.

He was transported to the county jail in lieu of $25,000 straight cash bond, police said.
