Passengers who are too large to fit comfortably in a single coach seat will be required to buy two tickets on the next flight or upgrade to business class, where seats are larger, if United's flight attendants can't find two open seats for them. United and other U.S. carriers are struggling with two conflicting trends: Aircraft cabins have never been more cramped as cash-strapped airlines try to squeeze the most revenue out of their planes, yet Americans have never been fatter.

Maybe people will finally lose weight!!

wow. imagine getting that dropped on you. this is gonan end up in court before anything even gets off the ground. its a form of descrimination and will cause teh airline to lose business. now whatthey have to figure out is. what weight limit qualifies as obese. if some one is 7'2 and weighs 350 lbs. thats not obese.. no if they are 5'2 and weigh 350 lbs then thats an issue. so the way i see it. they made a premature call on this and its gonan backfire.

yes i agree people do need to lose weight but this is a bit much right now and seems to me as its not completley thought through.

Holy Crap... i agree .. this will just end up in courts as a huge discrimination issue... yeah people can be over weight... so that can be also a huge insult.. what if your pregnant and having more than one child... does this mean you will have to pay extra due to the fact your larger than normal due to pregnancy?
I dont think this will last long

I don't mind it... hahah! Personally, I don't travel to much...

and #2 it will HELP people... who actually NEED to lose weight.

#3 they could base the obese scale on the BMI scale. WHich looks at your height and has a suggested weight range. If your below they could be fine, but if your above then you need help.

Also, the BMI shows how healthy you are. So if your over, it means your too obese and if it's under it means your to obese enough lol...

This solves like 3-4 problems in one. Airlines get some help and people do too!

Honestly I dont think the BMI is always accurate, as they dont always account for different races and so forth.. so that shouldnt be a counter for the airplanes
Obviously.. what are the BMI scale inventors and doctors supposed to say? Oh sorry sir your black, so you have to use this other scale.. LMAO...

They have to have one standard scale, which makes it fair for the most part. Otherwise people will say every race has a scale.. so this test is racist...

Here's an idea. Havethem sit in a seat. If they need a second seat just to be able to sit, then they pay for two. If you take up two seats you should pay for two. If this is taken to court it'll be over in minutes.

what if they take up 1 and 1/2 seats?? and then that makes others take others seats/.. and someone gets left out with a seat?? then they lose 1 seat!!!

maybe have two people who take up 1 and 1/2 seats right next to each other.
and how do you know how many seats a person will take up? not like you can see them before hand or know before hand.... and they can't say anything, because they haven't seen the seat sizes before they buy the ticket.

as I said, make them sit in one of the seats before paying.
That means EVERY agency needs a demo seat... Which isn't going to happen, because it will add further costs.

The way I see it. If your against the new upcoming rules, then DON'T FLY.... or take a cruise LOL...

The way I see the future flights is some will have weight restrictions and be CHEAPER tickets, and then there will be the very expensive airlines with the no weight restrictions... So you either pay a lot to fly... or you lose weight and fly cheaper.

for one thing if u sit in 1 and a half seat just charge them for the full 2, you can't sell half a ticket
and you wouldn't round down, if they wanna make money for a 1 and a half seat person charge 2
and instead of making them pay double, why not make bigger seats along the sides or something?

People are forgetting this is NOT about seats. They haven't added weight charges because of seat room.

They added weight, because they want to save the WEIGHT they have to fly. In other words, they want to SAVE fuel costs..... Airlines are dying right now and I'm not even sure how they are operating on LOSS...
