PS3 Price Cuts Coming Soon?
Analyst expects Sony to announce a cheaper PS3, perhaps even in the next few days.
by Chris Iaquinta

US, February 25, 2009 - Our spider sense is tingling, that must mean its time for another rumor of a PS3 price cut. According to Janco analyst Mike Hickey, Sony may be on the verge of announcing a lower price point on their super console, potentially even in the next few days, but for sure "April or by June at the latest." The question now becomes whether or not Hickey's prediction gets added to the long list of expected price cuts by Sony that have never seen the light of day.

Hickey believes that Sony needs to take at least $100 off the price tag of the PS3, or suffer an extended decline in sales. There is additional speculation surrounding the chance that a Blu-rayless PS3 could be announced, but are there that many potential customers who already have a Blu-ray player that will buy a PS3 just for the chance to play its small catalog of killer software? Our money is that we'll never see a Blu-ray free PlayStation 3, but we agree wholeheartedly that the current price point needs to change to help drive sales, especially in the current economic climate.

Sony's unwillingness to budge on this matter is reaching legendary status, despite the fact that it's well documented that the PS3 has nowhere near the market domination that the PS2 enjoyed. And remember those reports we talked about that showed Sony losing an arm and a leg profit wise across the boards? You'd think that they'd be willing to take some desperate measures to boost sales.

Would a $100 price cut convert you into a PS3 owner? Would you be interested in a Blu-rayless PS3? Post your comments below.

oh crap.. I've been WAITING for a price cut. If there is a price cut, I'm jumping ships from xbox to PS3... I've been wanting one, but the price has been a HUGE turn off.

I really hope there is a price cut! :D

Would you be interested in a Blu-rayless PS3?

Sure, why not? I don't buy and don't plan on buying bluray movies or discs... and unless games are in bluray format I doubt I need one?

Honestly, how many people even use the blu-ray player??

But like I said, if the price drops by $100.. I'm so getting a PS3. RIght now, I'm just waiting for a price drop and am in no rush... so I can wait all summer if I have too :p

Just to add. I heard that Sony DENIED the rumor of any price cuts coming anytime soon.... I can't find the link, but that's what I heard...

I hope that the price cuts ARE coming... because I've been waiting for it since ps3 came out lol... I'm not gonna spend too much on a new console.

Editor's Note: Since publishing the article, GameSpy has received an official statement from SCEA's Al DeLeon regarding the rumors of an imminent price cut.

"As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation. SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry's best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we're delivering with PS3."

tbh, thats why i am glad i bought it ages ago ;)

lol, who uses the blu-ray player on the ps3?

better question who used the DVD player on the PS2?
honestly i don't think it needs a movie player, i used the DVD on the ps2 all of what? 3 times?
lol
if it cuts down the prices i'm fine with no blu-ray player, not like i need one when i have DVD's that work just fine

Honestly why should they cut down the price?
That would be like selling a Porsche for very cheap...when you might as well sell it for a higher price.

Its so much better than the Wii and the XBOX 360...and great things have their price I guess.

I wouldn't say it's better... maybe it's better in terms of quality.. but not entirely on price or game titles... If the price isn't dropped, I don't plan on buying it and as I can tell from the past with the PS2 prices... it won;t be cut for awhile. Personally, I rather spend less and get more and possibly take a risk at a 360, if that means I get to save a handful of money and can use it for additional games.

Yeah.. that would be like selling a Porsche for cheap.. but when times are hard even the Porsche company would sell it cheap or find a cheaper solution for customers.

Truth is gaming is a competitive market and if you need to keep up with everyone else.. Sony isn't doing that right now. They are "trying" to win loyalty from their so called "name" or past customers. I don't think "sony" is such a fancy or superior brand.

haha so true.. I don't know many people, who've even used the DVD area... I think my cousin used it once on his room tv with his PS2, because he had an old skool tv and no dvd player. Otherwise, most people have a DVD player or heck use their PC as a way to watch DVD's LOL... I think blu-ray is a waste.. because your also going to have to end up paying extra for blu-ray discs... and as far as I know.. there aren't any blu-ray cheap burners either... :evil:cry:

I purchased my own PlayStation 3 when it was released immediately. I couldn't wait to take advantage of the price cut. Congratulations to all those who managed to take advantage of the offer.

It's the same thing with all consoles and not only Playstation consoles. It happened with Xbox 360 too. It's going to happen with Xbox Series X and PS5 soon.

This always happens for all PlayStation Consoles and I feel that the PlayStation 5 would soon get a price cut.
