The personal computer may soon be not-so-private, with the U.S. and some European nations working on laws allowing them access to search the content held on a person's hard drive.

President Obama's administration is keeping unusually tight-lipped on the details, which is raising concerns among computer users and liberty activists.

Almost everyone today owns a music player and a laptop. But what if the Government decided to allow itself to access these personal devices for no specific reason whatsoever?

Woah guys protect your comps o.o
Hmm is it even possible to protect them?
Well.. looks like this rule will ALSO apply in Europe... Apparently.. no.. I mean you can add a good password, but they will be able to crack it. Also, you could encrypt your hard drive, but I'm assuming the law will state "YOU MUST ALLOW AUTHORITIES ACCESS TO ALL FILES".

So, I'm sure if they feel your hiding files and they do find you are... then you'd probably get fined or go to jail. It's pretty much invasion of privacy. And no offense, but knowing the USA and some European governments, they will probably copy and store any/all of your files on their systems eg. your pics, letters, emails etc... Even if they don't need them... it's called data mining ;)

i want to move to canada, i have no desire to allow new laws to restrict my rights...

The Bill of Rights said:
3rd Amendment), privacy of the person and possessions as against unreasonable searches (4th Amendment), and the 5th Amendment's privilege against self-incrimination, which provides protection for the privacy of personal information.

isn't this enough to cancel out the new law?
because i beleive what is on my computer is "personal information"
and if a person finds it unreasonable to search one's computer(possession) then don't they need to get a warrent first?

Your talking about the freaking president.. he can make w.e happen if he wants to.. :p

I agree with you, but then they might say.. "oh you have terrorist or other secret information, which could post a threat to USA.. so we need your hard drive" LOL...come on man.. when the government wants something.. they always get it... the lil guys all get shat on!

I think for a long time.
It's impossible to get such a law through, that they can search through ANY pc 24hours a day. Not only do they violate your privacy, they are also doing illegal activities with hacking.
I remember something like this came in Netherland/Europe before, and they threw it off the table for privacy violation.

LMAO.. dude.. our privacy is being invaded DAILY.. it's just we don't know... Someone could be monitoring what your saying with a laser beam... YES a LASER beam can pickup sound...

They could be watching you via satellite.. LOL Anytime you use your credit card or bank card, they look at your charges... what you buy, when, where etc...

EVERY DAY our privacy is invaded.. it's just people are stupid and trusting to think we "still" have freedom. I presume it will get worse in parts of Europe and America within the next few years....

And it's getting worse, because people are misusing freedom and the system, so now governments have no choice but to invade our privacy... in ways which we wouldn't realize it, because apparently the government is smarter and superior than us regular people...

Seriously some people just panic when these things come up and most of the time it is false, also when proven false the scare is there that you just can't reason at times.

Yeah they can bring the law into effect but how on earth are they going to enforce it. Near enough every computer that has ever gone onto the internet has looked at something or downloaded something that is deemed illegal somewhere. Music, movies, games etc. And even now they can supposedly check ISPs to see.

Those incharge would not even be able to keep up they simply don't have the will or manpower so what will happen is that they will keep it something like Terrorism. Even then this thing will be shot down by the US Supreme court because it will violate some part of the constitution.

It won't go through so stop panicing people
