Drunk Driving

In cases where someone gets drunk and then has an accident where there is a fatality(a victim of the person who is drunk), is alcohol really an excuse? After all, that person knew beforehand that they could possibly have to drive somewhere, and then made the choice to consume alcohol. Basically, this argument consists of : Is alcohol a legitimate excuse for accidents?

They might have had a drink, then decided a drive though. It's a mix of stupidity and alcohol.

Oh, I understand they might not say to themselves beforehand " Hey, I'm going to drive later. " when they start drinking. However, even if the alcohol helped them make that decision, they're still the ones that knew they were getting intoxicated. If I go to drink, I'll have someone take my keys away and find a nice place to pass out. If someone else doesn't make that decision when they ARE sober, it's their own fault the alcohol didn't make them skip taking precautions, they just did. They threw the idea of safety to the wind and started to get drunk, regardless of if they made any decisions when drunk or sober, they still made the choice to get drunk and not take certain precautions. Sure, there are instances where you can't find a place to sleep(like a bar, but remember, bars always take your keys if you ask and they'll make you sober up first), but in that case, the person should take into consideration how much it'd be safe to drink. You can't just get plastered, go around driving the roads at 85mph one night, kill a person and then say " It was the alcohol ". That's like shooting someone in the face and saying " It was the gun. "

I think it's wrong to get drunk and then drive, but unless someone is really messed up, then they should be able to drive after having a little bit. Though if something bad does happen, the alcohol shouldn't be an excuse.

Yes. Guns do impair your judgement. It's funny how pointing a barrel down a man's throat can give you an ego-trip. Just because the shift of judgement isn't chemically induced doesn't mean it's not there.

ok, because i'm planning on shooting someone in the mouth and going to court? since when did an example turn into a scenario I'm living out? rofl. point I'm making, our legal system is based on the money in your pocket, not the story you've got. With the right lawyer by your side we have the most wonderful concept of justice ever.
